NTHS Students Gain New Perspective from Atop Hancock Bank.photo of students at conference

On Jan 26, 2018, National Technical Honor Society members Angel Adkins, Myles Price, and Jenari Taylor attended the Mississippi State Leadership Conference of NTHS at The Great Southern Club in Gulfport.  The conference was attended by more than 200 NTHS members from around the state.

After a delicious breakfast buffet and networking session, the students heard Mr Frankie Johnson, Ms Jessica Robinson, Ms Sara Smith, and Ms Daisy Carter from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.  Their program, “I Got You,” emphasizes healthy life choices for teens.  The morning session focused on understanding mental illness, suicide prevention, and self-injury prevention.  The Department of Mental Health now uses a Crisis Text helpline.  Students can text to 741741 to confidentially connect with a trained crisis counselor.

After an amazing lunch buffet and time to visit with new friends, it was back to “I Got You.”  The afternoon topics included alcohol & drug abuse prevention, teen dating violence prevention, impersonation, sexting, and cyber bullying.

The students all agreed that the day was well spent.

Jenari Taylor said, “This was a great experience!  I learned different ways that may help someone in many aspects of life.  I hope other students will be able to attend this event in the future.  I got to meet new people and hear other people’s viewpoints on different things in life.”

Angel Adkins expressed, “The day’s events were phenomenal.  I learned another perspective pertaining to everyday issues that sometimes go unaddressed.  I will definitely apply this knowledge to my daily routine, and will also pay more attention to my peers so I can be a leader and A.C.T (Acknowledge the problem, Care, and Tell a trusted adult.) when necessary.”

Myles Price felt that his experience in AP Psychology class and the prior knowledge gained from Ms Davis helped him during the presentation.  He actively participated in the discussion, and in doing so informed others who attended the meeting.  Myles cited two quotes that that resonated with him.  First, “Only you can set limits on yourself.” Second, “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.”

Mrs Maddox definitely stepped out of her comfort zone when she was called to the front with the other sponsors to learn that she would be doing a variety of popular dances—much to the students' amusement.  Students certainly don’t see that kind of whip and nae nae every day.  Posted Jan 29, 2018
