Harrison County Career & Technical Center DECA Members Take New York City by STORM!DECA students at GMA

DECA members from the Harrison County Career and Technical Center attended the New York DECA (An Association of Marketing Students) Experience Conference December 5- December 10, 2017.  The conference reinforced concepts taught in marketing, finance, hospitality and more. New York became the living classroom for DECA members as they explored marketing career opportunities in the big city.  Members attended interactive conferences that consisted of solid educational experiences, including a marketing strategies presentation from a marketing strategies specialist from Madison Square Garden, merchandising and marketing specialist from Macy’s and entrepreneurs from Berkeley College.  Along with the interactive workshops, students visited the financial district to learn the role of financial institutions, the types of financial markets, impact of technology on the banking industry, career opportunities in the marketing industry, the role of promotion as a marketing function and much more.

While in New York, HCCTC DECA members also took a financial district tour of Wall Street, NBC Tour, "Good Morning America," visited the 911 Memorial and toured the 911 Memorial Museum, Madison Square Garden tour, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, the Empire State Building, attended the Rockettes Christmas Show, the Broadway play Aladdin, Rockefeller Center, China Town, Soho, 5th Avenue, skating in Central Park, Battery Park, Ellen’s Stardust Café, and more.

Students attending the Conference included Darbi Parker, Kristyn Sison, Katelyn Fortenberry, Madison Nielson, Rivers Morton, Taylor Cox, Andy Klerk, and Logan Carlson.  Written by Savannah Crosby.

The students were excited about all they had seen and learned.  Rivers Morton was impressed by the 9/11 Museum.  She had not see it before, and appreciated the importance to know about that event, its history, and to reflect on the lessons of that day.  Madison Neilson enjoyed experiencing so many different cultures,  seeing how quickly the city responded to the snowstorm that hit while they were visiting, and the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom.

The Financial District made an impression on Taylor Cox, and she enjoyed seeing how "Good Morning America" was produced.  Logan Carlson was inspired by the speakers at the DECA event, and learned to appreciate the different perspectives brought by the successful young people from Macy's and Berkeley.  He also enjoyed the open-air double decker bus tour in the snowstorm.

Andrew Klerk met a variety of different people, and enjoyed the experience of the live performances--Aladdin and the Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.  Kaitlyn Fortenberry was moved by some of the homeless people they saw, as it brought into perspective that not everyone is well off in this world.  Meeting Robin Roberts at "Good Morning America" was an inspiration too see a local Mississippi girl achieving great things.

Darbi Parker won the "Good Morning America" selfie contest, and appreciated meeting the celebrities on the show.  She also learned more about marketing and life skills while learning to survive in a different culture. Kristyn Sison noticed the difference in the cost of living in New York, the higher prices, and the greater variety in shopping.  She was amazed by the view from the top of the Empire State Building.
